Some experiments Nov 4 2021

Well, a big experiment for me. I am planting bulbs in pots and leaving them in the shed or garage.

Planting bulbs

I planted some daffodils and tulips in a pot as well as hyacinth.

I also planted a few Allium bulbs in 3 locations in the back. I covered the bulbs with pine needles to keep the squirrels from digging up the bulbs.

Now covered with pine needles as well

the pots have about about 50 bulbs in these 3 pots

2021 October 12 End of the season

Surprisingly, I still have zucchini coming and there has been some re-growth since the hail storm.  The marigolds that I transplanted in pots in the back look good but not the ones in the blue boxes.

I have been going through pictures from the past and wow, I had great impatiens in the boxes and also near the house.  Last Saturday I did some clearing out of the garden which is more a mess than a garden.  I need to pull all the mint out and other ugly ground cover but that is going to take lots of work and time. The soil is like rocks.  I've neglected it too long.  I need a big shovel or something and lot of new soil.

The squirrels continue to torment me. I find peanuts all over. Makes me so made that neighbor feeds them.

Sometimes I just want to move and be done with it all.

But the only encouraging thing has been the dahlias.  And Linda let me having tomatoes and cucumbers so I have some sauce and pickles.  Well, I did get a few pickle-worthy cucumbers from my garden but most were awful.

We are leaving for CA on Oct 14 and a frost is coming so the end is near.

Zucchini still look healthy

Fought back from the hail

Wilson got me this lavendar but I think it is near the end.
My beautiful dahlias

September 17, 2021 Hail, big zucchini, no butternut and lemon cukes

September 2.   We were at the Hideaway in Monument and heard about the storm. I really did not care that much except for the front sweet potato vines.  What a mess but it is the end of the season.

Poor gladiola.

Check out what the hail did to the pepper
The hiding zucchini

Cherry tomato survivors

And the vine for the butternut was destroyed.  My cucumbers have been so weird but I think they are lemon cucumbers.  Taste good.

Today Tom found some semi-normal cucumbers so I did make two more jars of dill pickles.  I really like my recipe for refrigerator dill.   King Sooper was out of dill so had to go to WF

August 18, I think the number is 15 Z and 7 cukes so far. Pulled carrots. Note to self about carrot placement

Carrots not tasty so I made the ginger lemon carrot soup.
Don't plant carrots near the zucchini

At least I am getting a lot of cherry and chocolate cherry tomatoes

Yay, a dahlia

Note to self. Plant more of these next year instead of petunias

August 15 2021 Getting more zucchini. Maybe about 12 now?

There are a few normal looking cukes.  No Butternut at all. I have had maybe 3 summer squash this year.
Here are more pictures of the garden
Found this, looking at how it was drooping and water perked it up. It was in the pine tree garden where I had planted a poppy

What is this? Near summer squash area. Threw it out

This petunia looked really bad after we got back from the Family Gathering in CS.  I plucked it, cut it, gave it Miracle Gro

This one has done well all summer
Just love having a Boston fern.  They look good all summer

I have got to do something with this garden. It's a mess
Pulled out all the yarrow that was bending over...in time for the trash men
I have staked the gladiolas.  Hope for some pretty ones

I just love all the perennials.  Note the sweet potato vine in the boxes.  Next year I am putting those in and no petunias, rather, that kind of red leaf thing like Joan has.
Making chocolate zucchini bread today and made a stuffed zucchini Friday night

Note to self about making pickles

With the recipe I have for refrigerator dill, I made 3 big jars and 2 small jars today.

I used 2 or 3 cucumbers from my garden but also some from Linda's since I don't have very many.

I picked a few more zucchini. I'll need to make zucchini bread next week. Still getting cherry tomatoes.

Thursday, August 5, 2021

Well, it's just not a good year Aug 5, 2021

I guess we are up to 11 zucchini.  I was sorely disappointed in my zucchini chips.  They did not turn out as crunchy and kind of got very thin.

Tomorrow I'll cut that big one for a stuffed zucchini.

There are 4 zucchini growing and only 2 cucumbers.  I got one tomato, 2 cukes and a zucchini from Linda C.

Pickles just won't happen.

I am afraid it was because of that lattice. The cucumber just went all over, messing up the garden.

I have a couple summer squash but not one butternut coming.

Tomatoes on the window sill since blossom end rot still plaging me. I really really need a new hose and some bigger pots for next year

July 29, 2021 and only 10 zucchini so far

I did see a cucumber coming and there are a couple summer squash.

I had transplanted some marigolds to the front pots. They look awful but thankful I planed the spike and sweet potato vines so there is some color.

The temps are going down tomorrow and I will put more marigolds in there

Still getting blossom end rot. I had tried to find bigger pots to know avail but next year....

I have a bunch of green roma tomatoes on the window sill to get red before the rot gets them.

July 21, 2021 Not a good harvest so far.

It seems that I have so many "male" zucchini plants and also not many bees. So far, just 3 zucchini. No summer squash at all.  Cucumbers are slow.  I did have good snap peas and still cut lettuce today.  Froze young kale.

So the first picture shows the beautiful summer squash leaves but no fruit and the cucumbers are not going up the wall.  Then the healthy zucchini leaves but there is maybe 2 in there now.
When I got back from Family Gathering, this plant looked awful.  It just needs a lot of water so I've kind of brought it back in 5 days.
I see a little dahlia in there.
I am really happy that the lavender is now a light green and not looking so dead

Looks like I might get some gladiolas
And this flower is coneflower, a perennial

Petunias in the back are not doing well

Glad to still have day lilies

I've been dead heading a lot and hoping to keep these alive
I think Wilson may have forgotten to water my petunias so they died. I transferred some marigolds to these front pots.

At least I can grow basil
tomatoes are doing well. I keep putting bone meal in. I've had a little blossom end rot but not much.
Peppers sure don't need as much water. I've harvested banana peppers and waiting on the sweet peppers.
