August 31, 2018-Butternut Squash and something ate a cucumber

I put the butternut squash in the sun each day to see if they will turn brown
Not happy about this but have had so many....can't complain

Very happy about this dahlia

Those are spaghetti squash. For some reason, I cannot grow them.

August 26, 2018- the end is near

Well, I ended up using some leftover dill pickle solution, found some dill in the garden and made one more dill pickle jar.  Then with the cucumbers that got away, I made more bread and butter pickles.
The carrots are not good this year. I pulled them all out by Aug26. I probably should have done this a month ago.
Another blueberry, yogurt, zucchini bread.

 Yep, it's all zucchinibread
Pulled out the kale and lettuce that had gone to seed
Planted a few mums or fun
The tomatoes and some zucchini in the back need some heat. Some of the zucchini are skinny.  I pulled up the butternut squash and putting them in the sun, hoping they get brown.
I was thinking about how much I gave away this time.  Polete, Coulson, Siekmeier, Goerzen, Nesbit, took two to my family, Korsick (a whole bag of stuff), Rowe, Bailey, Heather B., lots to Alma, she really seems to appreciate them, Hendren, Wood
And breads too: Hendren, Stanley,Goerzen, Heather, Korsick, two to my family, two to SLC, Coulson

A Hawk and more! August 23, 2018

I am not sure what to do with the butternut squash. I made one soup but they are supposed to turn brown.  I read online that they need to be in sunlight. So they are sitting on the air conditioner.
Yes, a hawk. This may explain the decreased numbers of rabbits and squirrels.
Paula had a visit from a Centennial inspector saying there had been an anonymous tip that she was feeding squirrels. I wonder who did that. It wasn't us.

Green apple and carrot juice!

I started digging up the carrots and used some apples from various trees in my yard and the neighborhood and made a wonderful green apple and carrot juice lunch.

August 20, 2018- cooler and garden is slowing down

We will end up with two green bean meals.  Not so many summer squash but enough for the yummy lemon, summer squash, chia seed bread

Now a pink gladiola!!

I gave Alma two of the butternut squash.  More are in there. Love the Italian cucumbers and banana peppers.  I heard about a really weird Italian squash.  My grandmother never had it.  It hangs vertically. I wonder if I can grow it. Apparently, it grows well in the southern US. Maybe my "Italian cucumber is actually cucuzza?? I don't think the seeds said that.

August 18, 2018- back from SLC

Tom kindly cut two of the butternut squash and I made this curry, coconut milk soup. In the freezer

I added a few carrots

This was the produce while I was gone

Just love the flowers.  The sedum is very hardy and I need more of that for the pine tree garden. And that sweet potato vine...Good grief. It's taken over but I like it.

August 13, 2018-tomato salad, butternut squash and pictures

Feta basil tomato salad.  Basil and tomato all from garden

It's a butternut squash after all.  I read that butternut squash and cucumber cannot cross pollinate

Just some garden views mid August

The Hummingbirds have been a delight to the summer in spite of the squirrels, magpies and rabbits.

I know, I know....Joan made it for me. What can i say

Thought the hummingbirds might come to the hat

No, but they come to the feeder. I change the nectar every 3-4 days.

August 11, 2018 - flower update.

Dahlias have returned

Great to see a carnation

Really amazed that the gladiolas came this year

From a bulb from I think King Soopers

Magpies and tomatoes and that Gladiola. Aug 10, 2018

We have had so many tomatoes this year.  More than ever. I just picked some that were almost ripe because Tom said he saw one of the magpies that have been congregating in our backyard with a tomato in his mouth!

A fuchsia gladiola!  Really excited about this one.

I noticed that the beetles have eaten some of the sweet potato leaves.  I find maybe one a day but I see evidence of their destruction in the morning.

The summer squash and zucchini are going bad in the refrigerator, as are the cucumbers. So on August 9th I made more dill pickles and a zucchini applesauce choco chip recipe.   And it's Friday so I am going to try Janet Wells' recipe for a zucchini pizza crust.

Cucumbers are hiding from me as well!

48 zucchini and more pictures.

I thought I had 63 zucchini but only 48!  I think that I've been blessed with produce this year and for some reasons, others' gardens have not done so well.  Even Paula's tomatoes are still green and I have so many red ones. Made fresh salsa and eat tomatoes every day.

That gladiola is BEAUTIFUL
Fushia!
And dahlias in pots and in the back!

And glad to see a carnation again
The sweet potato vines are luscious.

I am glad for the "early" harvest as I think of one month from now when we have meetings in C. Springs and then I go to Machu Picchu.

I have so much to do.....notes from conference calls, working on my book, working on Cora's book, working on the reunion book, making more things from the garden!!!

August 6, 2018 Gladiolas, dahlias, monster zucchini

A year ago, more than a year ago, I planted some gladiola bulbs.  Leaves came up but no flowers.  But flowers are coming this year.

Looks like it is going to be a yellow dahlia
The roses given to us in June 2017
One spaghetti squash

And another one

The beans that are NOT producing. I think it was because the beans almost died in the June heat

Some mums that keep returning

I picked two more zucchini and watered then at about 8:30pm, hail

Thankful we did not have the baseball size hail balls in C. Springs.  Injured people.  the pictures and videos were really scary
I made zucchini relish today, a huge zucchini made 3 small jars
